Laying emphasis on longevity of roads, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is recarpeting few stretches using plastic and Crumb Rubber Modified Bitumen methods.
The first plastic road in the city, on the Uppal-Nagole stretch, was laid last year and buoyed with the success, GHMC laid more plastic roads in different areas such as BN Reddy, LB Nagar, Mansoorabad, and Jubilee Hills. The roads were laid using an amalgam of bitumen and plastic, especially polythene covers. Now, GHMC is taking it further, with the recarpeting of four stretches beginning in Sainikpuri on Tuesday.
Usage of plastic waste in laying roads helps in controlling water seepage beneath the road surface, besides reducing the expenditure, officials said.
Likewise, as a pilot project, GHMC had also laid a Crumb Rubber Modified Bitumen (CRMB) eco-friendly road from NCC Gate to the Police Station on the Osmania University campus. Under the CRMB technology, GHMC is utilising the amalgamation of old and discarded four-wheeler tyres and the conventional bitumen for laying the road. The old tyres are burnt and reduced to form a liquid and then mixed with bitumen in 20 to 25 per cent proportion.
The entire stretch from NCC Gate to Police Station was laid at a cost of Rs 96.50 lakh and an additional Rs 12.50 lakh was spent for lane marking.
